A free order of service template that fills itself in

Most templates give you an empty layout, then leave you to find the readings, fix the spacing and work out the page order. This one starts with next Sunday already set.

What belongs on an order of service

  • A cover with your church’s name, the date, the Sunday in the church year and the time.
  • The shape of the service, so a visitor always knows what comes next.
  • The words people say aloud, marked in bold.
  • Hymn numbers, or the words if you have no hymn books.
  • The readings, by reference or in full.
  • Notices and dates on the back page, with who to contact.
  • A line of welcome for anyone who is new, and how to give.

A plain template you can copy

This is the shape of a four-page Sunday booklet. Change anything that does not fit your church. Our order of service examples show the shape for other traditions.

Four pages or eight?

Because a booklet is folded, it has to come in multiples of four. One sheet makes four pages, and two sheets make eight. If you find yourself on five or six, the quickest fixes are fewer verses, readings by reference, or the notices on a loose sheet.

How to make it easy to read

  • Keep the type at 12 point or larger, and have large-print copies ready.
  • Mark what the congregation says in bold, so people can find their place.
  • Say when to stand and when to sit. A visitor is watching everyone else to find out.
  • Explain anything a newcomer would not know, such as who may receive communion.
  • Leave a wider margin down the middle, so nothing disappears into the fold.
  • Keep notices short, and put a date and a contact on each one.

Pick a style

Every template is built around how a booklet is really read: held in one hand, in a dim building, by someone looking for the next line. You can change the template at any time and your service reflows.

  • Traditional has two colours, in the prayer-book manner. Try Traditional.
  • Contemporary is one colour, with strong headings that survive a tired photocopier. Try Contemporary.
  • Sermon series is for churches that preach through a series and follow no lectionary. Try Sermon series.

Questions people ask

Is it really free?

Yes. You can try it with no sign-up and no card. Ten services a year stay free, and after that it is £3 a service, or £96 a year for everything. See our pricing.

What file do I get?

A print-ready PDF, arranged so that the pages fold into the right order on A4. We email it to you with no password and no card.

Can I change the wording?

Every word. Your church’s own prayers, responses and notices stay exactly as you write them, and any change can be undone.

Does it work if we do not follow the lectionary?

Yes. The Sermon series template is made for churches that preach through a series, and you can set the readings yourself in any template.
